A dog was found dead by firefighters after a fire that broke out and caused significant damage to a house in Round Lake Park Monday morning, fire officials said.

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded around 9:30 a.m. Monday to the 300 block of Clifton Drive in Round Lake Park for a report of a structure fire.

Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Jay VandeBerg said multiple people who saw smoke and flames coming from a home called 911 to report the incident.

Firefighters arrived and found flames showing from the rear of the single-family, single-story home.

Firefighters pulled a hose line and had water on the fire within a couple of minutes, VandeBerg said.

Crews conducted a search of the house and found no one was home at the time of the fire.

During the searches, firefighters found a dog that was pronounced dead.

The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes, VandeBerg said.

The Grayslake, Fox Lake, Wauconda and Gurnee fire departments assisted at the scene.

The McHenry and Antioch fire departments covered Round Lake fire stations during the incident.

No injuries were reported to firefighters. A damage estimate was not immediately available.

VandeBerg said the American Red Cross is assisting the family that was displaced after the home was deemed uninhabitable.

No other homes were damaged and crews remained at the scene for approximately an hour and a half.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District and other area fire investigators.
