Fire officials say a fire caused significant damage to a vacant commercial building in North Chicago and the cause of the fire is being considered suspicious.

The North Chicago Fire Department responded around 12:32 p.m. Saturday to the area of Sheridan Road and 18th Street for a report of a structure fire.

North Chicago Fire Chief John Umek said a passerby called 911 to report smoke in the area.

Firefighters arrived to find flames and smoke showing from the roof of a vacant outbuilding at 1900 Marquette Street.

A Working Still Alarm upgrade was dispatched to bring additional fire crews to the scene.

Umek said firefighters made entry and found a large stack of pallets burning up to the roof area of the single-story building, which was approximately 75 feet by 40 feet in size.

Firefighters began extinguishing the fire quickly, preventing further roof damage.

No injuries were reported to any firefighters, Umek said. No one was found in the building at the time of the fire.

A board-up company responded to the scene to secure the building, which sustained significant damage.

Umek said the fire appears to be suspicious in nature and remains under investigation.
