A suspect was taken into custody after police say he fired a shotgun outside an apartment building in Buffalo Grove and then fled on foot from officers Thursday morning.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 12:14 a.m. Thursday to the Chevy Chase Apartments in the 1300 block of Johnson Drive.

Police officials said it was initially reported as an armed robbery and then classified as a man with a gun call.

A witness told responding officers they heard a gunshot and were then confronted by a male subject armed with a shotgun.

The subject ordered entry into the building and then left the witness behind, police officials said.

A spent shotgun shell was located outside the building by police officers.

The witness gave a description of the suspect to police and officers searched the apartment building for the offender.

Police officials say they determined that the suspect who matched the description was Kevin R. Smith, 61, who lives at the address.

Officers made contact with Smith and he fled the scene on foot but was apprehended nearby a short time later.

A further investigation showed Smith was in possession of several weapons and ammunition, including a shotgun that was recovered by police.

There were no reported injuries or property damage as a result of the shooting, police officials said.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and approved charges against Smith for aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm.

Smith was transported to First Appearance Court on Thursday afternoon and police seized the recovered firearms and ammunition.

Smith is being held in the Lake County Jail until a detention hearing, which is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
