A driver was hospitalized after he reportedly lost consciousness and drove a dump truck off the roadway and down into an embankment into trees in Deer Park.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 12:30 p.m. Monday to the area of Lake Cook Road and Plum Grove Road in Deer Park for a vehicle crash.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said a 2007 Freightliner was traveling eastbound on Lake Cook Road near Plum Grove Road.

The driver, a 60-year-old Norridge man, believed a medical condition made him “pass out.”

The dump truck, while the driver was unconscious, crossed into the oncoming lanes of traffic, Covelli said.

The truck drove off the roadway to the north and down an embankment, striking several trees.

Paramedics transported the driver to an area hospital with minor injuries.

“We are grateful this crash did not result in another vehicle being struck or more serious injuries,” Covelli said.

The sheriff’s office notified the Illinois Secretary of State due to a medical condition potentially causing the series of events.

The Illinois Secretary of State will determine the driver’s licensing status.

Two heavy wreckers from A-1 Express Towing responded to the scene to remove the truck from the wooded area and emergency crews blocked the westbound lane during the process.
