Firefighters rescued a driver trapped and injured inside a truck that became engulfed in flames and spread to a gas station building in Waukegan, authorities said.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 4 a.m. Wednesday to the Amoco gas station at Washington Street and McAree Road for a report of a structure fire.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said fire crews arrived to find a vehicle on fire in close proximity to the building.

The pickup truck was well engulfed in flames and the driver was trapped inside.

Fire crews began pulling a hose line to extinguish the fire, Zupec said.

The fire extended into the soffit area of the building and firefighters worked to extinguish it.

Zupec said firefighters rescued the driver of the vehicle and also conducted a search of the gas station.

Firefighters removed the store attendant who was still inside the building.

The fire was extinguished and overhaul operations were completed to ensure that the fire had not extended further, Zupec said.

The driver who was rescued was transported to the hospital with injuries from the fire. The man’s condition was not released.

Zupec said there was significant damage to the front face of the gas station.

The Waukegan Fire Department is continuing its investigation into the cause of the fire.
