A man jailed for threatening to shoot and kill a Waukegan Police Officer is facing a fitness hearing Tuesday, court records show.
Ivan Jimenez-Rosendo, 21, of Waukegan, was taken into custody by Waukegan police on April 11 after allegedly walking into the Waukegan Police Department at 5:30 a.m. and asking the front desk to speak to a specific police officer, court records show.
Police said Jimenez-Rosendo asked for the police officer by name and claimed to be a family member, court records show.
The officer came out, realized Jimenez-Rosendo wasn’t a family member, scolded him for lying, then told Jimenez-Rosendo to leave.
However, Jimenez-Rosendo refused to leave and sat in the waiting room at the Waukegan Police Department for another two-and-a-half hours, court records show.
Court records show that at about 8 a.m., the front desk officer again told Jimenez-Rosendo to leave because he wasn’t there for police business. However, Jimenez refused.
At that time, Jimenez-Rosendo was issued a warning for trespassing, but still refused to leave.
At about 8:30 a.m., court records show Jimenez-Rosendo saw the officer working and began flashing gang signs at him, court records show.
The officer came out and again told Jimenez-Rosendo to leave, but he refused, court records show. The officer took Jimenez-Rosendo into custody.
While in custody, Jimenez-Rosendo told the officer that he would “kill him,” “kill his whole family,” and that he had ties to a Mexican cartel, court records show.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the incident and authorized charges of Threatening a Public Official, a class 3 felony, and a misdemeanor count of trespassing.
During his initial court appearance, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a motion to detain Jiminez-Rosendo in jail until trial.
A detention hearing was held on April 14, and a Lake County Judge decided to detain Jimenez-Rosendo while awaiting trial.
During a later court appearance, officials ordered a fitness hearing to take place. That hearing is scheduled to take place on May 6.
