A homicide investigation is underway after a man died after he was found with multiple stab wounds in the street in Waukegan Sunday evening, officials said.

The Waukegan Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 9:55 p.m. Sunday to the 12700 block of West Harrison Avenue in Waukegan for a report of a stabbing.

Fire officials said an adult male subject was found in the street and had been stabbed.

The victim was critically injured. He was unresponsive when officers arrived.

Officers began performing first aid and started CPR on him until paramedics took over care, fire officials said.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said the man had suffered multiple sharp force injuries.

The fire department transported the victim to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

He was pronounced dead in the emergency room around 11:20 p.m. Sunday.

The Gurnee Fire Department responded to the scene due to the home being located in their fire district but the victim was located in the street in front of the house, which is in Waukegan’s jurisdiction and the Waukegan Police Department is leading the investigation.

The coroner’s office was expected to perform an autopsy on the male victim on Monday.

His identity has not been released yet pending notification to next of kin.

The police department said it would release further details on the homicide on Tuesday. It is unknown whether anyone is in custody.
