A driver surprisingly escaped without injury after he drove his car off the roadway and rolled over on top of an embankment near Wauconda, the sheriff’s office said.
The Wauconda Fire District and Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 12:50 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Gilmer Road and Callahan Road in unincorporated Wauconda for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Multiple 911 callers reported that a vehicle had rolled over in the ditch onto its roof.
The incident was upgraded to a vehicle crash with entrapment after it was reported that the driver was still inside the car and possibly unconscious.
Fire crews arrived and reported the driver was conscious and had self-extricated himself from the vehicle, which was approximately 20 yards off the roadway.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the Toyota RAV4, driven by a 59-year-old Northlake man, was traveling southbound on Gilmer Road.
The Toyota drove onto the soft gravel shoulder near a curve in Gilmer Road and the driver overcorrected, Covelli said.
The overcorrection resulted in the Toyota sliding and traveling off the east side of the roadway up an embankment.
The Toyota rolled over and came to rest on its roof.
Covelli said the male driver was evaluated by paramedics and declined transport to the hospital.
No passengers were in the Toyota and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. A tow truck removed the car from the scene.
