Residents were left displaced after an overnight fire caused significant damage to their house in Waukegan, the second fire in less than a year at the same residence.

The Waukegan Fire Department responded around 2:30 a.m. Monday to the 500 block of Chestnut Street in Waukegan for a report of a structure fire.

Waukegan Fire Marshal Todd Zupec said firefighters arrived and found heavy flames showing.

The fire was coming from the front windows and the side of the house.

Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire while performing searches to ensure all occupants were evacuated from the house.

The fire was confined mostly to an enclosed front porch, Zupec said.

There was also significant damage to the exterior of the home.

All occupants were able to evacuate on their own before the fire department arrived.

No injuries were reported to any residents or firefighters.

No pets were involved and the home was deemed uninhabitable pending an inspection by the building department.

Waukegan Sixth Ward Alderman Keith Turner said this was the second fire to occur at the same home in less than a year.

“Only one fire truck could reach the house because cars were parked on both sides of the street in violation of the Alternate Parking Ordinance. This is one of the reasons why the ordinance was created,” Turner said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Waukegan Fire Department.
