A Barrington acupuncturist accused of multiple sexual assaults has been sentenced to public service for inappropriate touching of a female client during a home visit in Crystal Lake.

Kwan Chong, 65, of Palatine, was charged in December 2023 with one count of aggravated criminal sexual assault and one count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual assault.

The Barrington Police Department said at the time that the charges stemmed from two separate victims making police reports with the department.

Chong allegedly sexually assaulted one of the victims and tried to sexually assault the second victim, police said.

Police said the incidents both occurred during the course of acupuncture treatment at Chong’s office.

After the first two victims came forward, a third victim came forward with similar allegations. All three victims are adult females.

Chong was the owner of Holistic Acupuncture, which was located at 109 East Station Street in Barrington.

The business name does not appear to be registered with the State of Illinois and has since been closed.

State records show Chong was a licensed acupuncturist since 2000 who had never been disciplined before.

After the allegations against Chong, the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation ordered Chong to practice only with a chaperone present during patient encounters.

A week later, the agency suspended Chong’s license for failing to comply with the chaperone order.

Chong was taken into police custody in December 2023 and transported to Cook County Court where he was released on a cash bond following the hearing.

Chong was additionally charged in McHenry County Circuit Court in December 2023 with criminal sexual abuse, a Class 4 felony, and aggravated battery, a Class 3 felony.

Those charges stemmed from an incident on August 31, 2022, where Chong touched the breast of a woman over the age of 60 during a home visit in Crystal Lake, court records show. The woman was a client of Chong, police said.

Court records show Chong entered into a negotiated plea deal with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office this month.

He pleaded guilty to an amended count of battery, a Class A misdemeanor, in exchange for his felony charges being dismissed.

McHenry County Judge Tiffany Davis accepted the plea and sentenced Chong to one year of conditional discharge and 50 hours of public service.

He was ordered to have no contact with the victim and pay $683 in court fines and fees.

The cases against Chong in Cook County remain active and he is set to appear in court again next month.
