A report of a large chemical spill in a drainage ditch made by a concerned citizen prompted a hazardous materials response in Lake Zurich Thursday evening.

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department responded around 5:45 p.m. Thursday to the area of Oakwood Road and Donata Court in Lake Zurich for a report of a hazardous materials incident.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) contacted Lake Zurich first responders regarding a report of a possible large chemical spill in the area.

Lake Zurich Fire Chief David Pilgard said a concerned citizen notified the EPA a couple of days prior.

The citizen reported what they thought were chemicals in the drainage ditch on Donata Court, which is an industrial area.

Multiple hazardous materials technicians from fire departments in the area responded to the scene as a precaution, Pilgard said.

Firefighters checked all of the retention ponds and ditches in the area using testing paper and gas detectors with no indication of any spills.

Pilgard said he also spoke with the person who notified the EPA and they had a photo of what they had seen.

The photo showed what appeared to be just algae and pollen and did not appear to be any chemicals.

Another fire department stood by at Lake Zurich’s fire station during the incident in case of other calls.
