Residents were able to escape but were left homeless after a fire caused significant damage to a house in Lakemoor Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 1:50 p.m. to the 300 block of South Highland Drive in Lakemoor.
McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Ryan Mastandrea said the call was initially for a report of an oven on fire.
Fire crews arrived in seven minutes to find a two-story single-family home with heavy smoke coming from the front door.
All residents were out of the house prior to the arrival of the fire department, Mastandrea said.
The incident was immediately upgraded to a working fire response to bring additional resources to the scene.
Mastandrea said firefighters began an aggressive interior attack on the fire while also searching the home for any occupants.
The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes and no one was located inside.
Mastandrea said there was significant fire damage to the kitchen as well as smoke and water damage throughout the home.
There were no injuries to the firefighters or residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation and the home was deemed uninhabitable, Mastandrea added.
The Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox Lake, Round Lake, Nunda Rural, Richmond, Spring Grove, Wauconda, Wonder Lake and Woodstock fire departments assisted at the scene or covered McHenry fire stations.
