A Lake County man who suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing his pickup truck into a tree near Wauconda over one year ago has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, authorities said.
Adrian Torres, 29, of 19700 block of W Grand Ave, unincorporated Lake Villa, was three times the legal limit for alcohol and had cocaine in his system when he crashed a GMC Sierra into a tree near Fairfield and Chardon roads in unincorporated Wauconda at 4:40 a.m. on April 13, 2024, said Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
Court records show Torres is charged with four misdemeanor counts of DUI that include driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of drugs.
Torres is due in court on June 25.
Covelli said the charges came after a thorough investigation that included receiving and examining court-ordered and subpoenaed records.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Wauconda Fire District, and Grayslake Fire Department were dispatched for a car that crashed into a tree with one person injured.
Wauconda Fire District Lt. Michael Young said at the time the 2016 GMC Sierra sustained heavy damage after striking a group of trees.
Torres was heavily entrapped in the vehicle and required prolonged extrication by firefighters, Young said.
Covelli said Torres suffered critical injuries in the crash.
A preliminary investigation shows the GMC Sierra was traveling southbound on Fairfield Road when it crossed the center line.
At the time, Covelli said the GMC Sierra left the pavement on the east side of the roadway, crossed a driveway, and struck a large tree head-on.
Covelli said it was unknown at the time what caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The driver was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with critical, life-threatening injuries.
