No injuries were reported, but heavy delays were experienced after a train hit a car in Grayslake early Thursday morning.
A Honda Civic driven by a 19-year-old driver became stuck on the railroad tracks at Route 120 and Route 83 at 4 a.m., Grayslake Police said in a news release Thursday.
The driver, unfamiliar with the area, turned onto the tracks from eastbound Route 120 instead of turning onto Route 83, police said.
The driver exited the vehicle minutes before a southbound freight train hit the car minutes later.
No one was injured in the incident, police said.
The crash resulted in significant traffic delays at Route 120 and Route 83, authorities said.
The car was removed at around 7:45 a.m., and the roadway was reopened.
Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile said the crash resulted in North Central Service Line train cancellations between Antioch to Union Station.
She said train numbers 100, 102, 108, and 101 were all suspended following the crash while awaiting the track to reopen.
Officials were awaiting a Canadian National track inspector to inspect the track to ensure there was no significant damage to the tracks in the area before trains resume.
It’s unclear when the tracks would reopen, she said.
