An 80-year-old Crystal Lake man was sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine.
Salvador Herrera-Castro was charged by the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office in September of 2024 with manufacturing or delivery of 15-100 grams of fentanyl, manufacturing or delivery of 15-100 grams of cocaine, possession of 15-100 grams of cocaine, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a firearm without a FOID, possession of ammunition without a FOID and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court following his arrest said he possessed a substance containing cocaine and fentanyl in the amount of 15-100 grams in Crystal Lake and was also found in possession of a .38 special Taurus revolver despite not having a Firearm Owner’s Identification card, the complaint said.
Ammunition for the gun was also recovered.
Court documents also showed the drugs and gun were found following a traffic stop and a search warrant executed on Herrera-Castro’s residence, which is located in the 300 block of Valhalla Circle in Crystal Lake.
At the residence, police found nearly 80 grams of fentanyl and cocaine substances, $21,000 in cash, and drug paraphernalia consisting of a weight plate with suspected cocaine residue, court documents said.
The Crystal Lake Police Department arrested Herrera-Castro and transported him to the McHenry County Jail.
The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Herrera-Castro pending trial, where he remained until the plea deal that was approved Wednesday.
Court records show he formally pleaded guilty to the Class 1 felony charge of possession of 15-100 grams of cocaine.
Herrera-Castro is required to serve 50 percent of the sentence and will receive credit for the 289 days he has already served in McHenry County Jail while awaiting trial.
