Raymond V. Kanarowski, 77, of McHenry

A McHenry man has been charged with firing a gun with the intent to scare his wife and daughter during a domestic dispute Sunday evening, authorities said.

Raymond V. Kanarowski, 77, is facing felony charges of aggravated discharge of a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated assault following the incident in the 600 block of Silbury Court, McHenry Police Chief John R. Birk said in a news release Monday.

Kanarowski is also charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated assault, Birk said.

Birk said police officers were called to the 600 block of Silbury for a report of a domestic dispute involving a gun at 8:20 p.m. Sunday.

Officers arrived at the location and determined Kanarowski, of the 600 block of Mineral Springs Drive, had been involved in the dispute with his 75-year-old spouse and 46-year-old daughter, Birk said.

During the dispute, Kanarowski pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds, Birk said.

The criminal complaint filed in McHenry County court shows Kanarowski placed a 9 mm Glock handgun behind his wife and fired off several rounds with the intent to scare her.

Court records also show he pointed the Glock at his daughter and fired off several rounds with the same intent to scare her.

There were no reported injuries by anyone involved, Birk said, and Kanarowski was taken into custody at the scene without incident.

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two Class X felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, court records show.

The charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated assault are Class 4 felonies, court records show.

The McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Kanarowski until trial. That hearing is set for later this week, court records show.
