A McHenry man who died Saturday following an electric scooter crash in unincorporated McHenry County was not wearing a helmet, sheriff officials said.

McHenry County Sheriff officials said in a news release Wednesday that they are still investigating why Bruce Neiswanger, 53, was ejected from the scooter as it traveled southbound in the 5000 block of Wildwood Drive.

Emergency personnel from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Island Lake Police Department, and Wauconda Fire District responded to the scene of the incident involving a Segway eKick Scooter ZT3 Pro at 10:03 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, officials said.

Sheriff officials said preliminary findings indicate that the scooter was traveling southbound on Wildwood Drive when the operator was ejected from the unit and landed in the roadway.

Neiswanger, the sole occupant of the scooter, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, officials said.

Fire District Battalion Chief Jason Daun said emergency personnel learned through dispatchers that bystanders were performing CPR on the Neiswanger.

Neiswanger was transported by ambulance to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Lake County Coroner officials said Neiswanger was pronounced dead at the hospital Sunday.

The incident remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
