A Lake Zurich adult and a juvenile have been charged with battery following a physical fight at a convenience store that started as a verbal argument hours earlier, police said.
Lake Zurich Deputy Chief Colin Gaffney said officers were called to the 7-Eleven convenience store in the 600 block of East Main Street at 6:46 p.m. for a report of a fight in progress.
Upon arrival, officers located the victim outside of the store while Elijah Wiles, 22, of Lake Zurich, and a juvenile, waited across the street, Gaffney said.
Officers also discovered all three were suffering injuries from the fight that took place inside the store, Gaffney said.
Investigating officers learned the victim of the fight had a verbal argument with Wiles and the juvenile at another location a couple of hours previously.
That verbal altercation did not escalate and ended without fighting involved, Gaffney said.
However, Wiles and the juvenile were inside the 7-Eleven when the victim walked in to buy something, Gaffney said.
The argument reignited, Gaffney said, and escalated into a physical fight.
Gaffney said the victim retrieved a knife from his pocket after being struck by the offenders.
The knife was not used during the fight inside the store, Gaffney said.
Wiles and the juvenile were transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for minor injuries.
They were treated and later released, Gaffney said.
Wiles and the juvenile were charged later with single counts of battery for their role in the fight.
Wiles is due to appear in Lake County Circuit Court in Mundelein in July.
The incident remains under investigation, Gaffney said.
