The Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts recognized four members with Life Saving Phoenix Awards during a ceremony honoring their actions in saving a life in a recent medical emergency.
Marengo crews were dispatched to assist 72-year-old John Cederlund, who was experiencing chest pains, on Wednesday, March 28, said Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.
When emergency personnel arrived at the residence, he was alert and talking, Vucha said.
Moments later, he said he felt like he was going to pass out and suddenly went into cardiac arrest, Vucha said.
Crews moved him to the ground and began CPR, Vucha said,
A defibrillator was also used to deliver a life-saving shock that successfully restarted his heart, Vucha said.
John was stabilized with oxygen and IV access before being transported to a local hospital for further treatment.
Vucha said, thanks to the team’s training, fast response, and coordinated efforts, John survived what could have been a fatal emergency.
The Life Saving Phoenix Awards were presented to Battalion Chief Bill Weiss, Firefighter Paramedics Montana Bochette and Kiersten Wills, and Firefighter EMT Dylan Hart for their dedication to duty, quick action, and outstanding teamwork.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Cederlund surprised the department by presenting a $10,000 donation to the Marengo Fire & Rescue Districts in appreciation for the care he received.
“I could not be prouder of our crew and of all the members of this district who commit themselves each day to serving the community,” said Fire Chief John Kimmel. “This donation will be carefully considered in the coming days, but it will likely go toward medical equipment. These are the tools that help save future lives, just like John’s.”
Jan Cederlund, the victim’s wife, emphasized the importance of well-trained responders and properly equipped fire districts.
“The role they play is often underestimated until they actually save a life. We know firsthand that John would not be here without their life-saving efforts,” she said.
Jan Cederlund also shared that John previously trained as a paramedic and that their family has a personal connection to the Lauren Laman Law, which advocates for CPR training in schools.
