The McHenry County Coroner’s Office has identified the 27-year-old motorcyclist from McHenry who was killed in a crash near Spring Grove on Sunday.
The McHenry County Coroner’s Office identified the motorcyclist as Jeffrey Westphal, 27, of McHenry.
A GoFundMe account has been established to assist with the financial burden of Westphal’s death, the account reads.
The GoFundMe account says Westphal left behind a mother, three brothers, and a 3-year-old son. The account was created to help cover the cost of a memorial service, with any excess funds going to his son.
McHenry County Sheriff officials said in a news release Wednesday morning that Westphal died at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital following a crash with a Honda Civic at the intersection of Johnsburg and Miller Roads at 3:03 p.m. Sunday.
Authorities said in the release that the preliminary investigation indicates Westphal’s 2009 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling southbound on Johnsburg Road when it collided with the driver’s side of a 2021 Honda Civic, which was turning north onto Johnsburg Road from Miller Road.
The impact caused both vehicles to come to rest within the intersection, authorities said.
Westphal was wearing a helmet and was the sole occupant of the motorcycle, authorities said.
The 17-year-old driver of the Honda Civic was transported to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.
The 45-year-old passenger in the Civic was not injured, authorities said.
Both occupants of the Honda were wearing seatbelts, and the vehicle’s airbags deployed as a result of the crash, authorities said.
The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, officials said.
