A U.S. Navy sailor who is a suspect in a mass Memorial Day weekend shooting that wounded at least 10 people has waived extradition and will be returned to South Carolina.

Shawon Shamarion Williams, 19, was arrested by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and was booked into the Lake County Jail north of Chicago at 8:40 p.m. Thursday.

Williams, who was assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes in North Chicago, waived extradition in front of Lake County Associate Judge Stephen DeRue early Friday morning.

News reports say Williams was a person of interest in a mass shooting of 10 people as they got off a boat in Little River, South Carolina.

Police said an argument after a charter boat had docked led to a shooting that left 10 people injured near Myrtle Beach.

According WYFF4.com in South Carolina, a flyer for an event posted online called “Rock tha Boat” birthday party departed with 124 party-goers and four crew members on a private charter boat for a three-hour-long cruise.

Authorities were dispatched around 9:17 p.m. Sunday to a boat dock off Watson Avenue in Little River after multiple people had been shot shortly after the boat docked, news media are reporting.

Authorities said all victims were expected to survive the shooting, news media are reporting.

CBS News is reporting on its website that Williams is expected to be charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and possession of a weapon by South Carolina prosecutors for his role during the mass shooting.

Williams was a hull maintenance technician seaman assigned to the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Great Lakes, the Navy told CBS News.

After his arrest, NCIS transferred custody of Williams to Lake County for the extradition hearing.
