An industrial-grade hydrogen peroxide leak resulted in the evacuation of one building at Baxter Healthcare in Round Lake Sunday afternoon, fire officials said.
Emergency personnel from the Fox Lake Fire Protection District were called to Baxter Healthcare at 25212 Route 120 in Round Lake due to an unknown substance leaking, said Lt. Sam Santiago of the Fox Lake Fire Protection District.
Upon arrival, Santiago said emergency crews saw a vapor cloud from the release of industrial-grade hydrogen peroxide at one of the loading docks at one of the buildings at the Baxter complex, Santiago said.
Employees working at the facility were already evacuated from the building, he said, and no injuries were reported.
Santiago said a hazardous material mutual aid box alarm was pulled, summoning technicians and specialized apparatus from nearby Lake County, McHenry County, and Wisconsin.
Hazmat personnel from Round Lake, Wauconda, Lake Villa, Antioch, Grayslake, Lake Zurich, Gurnee, Zion, Newport, Libertyville, Lake Forest, Mundelein, Spring Grove and Bristol, Wisconsin, were called to the scene to assist, Santiago said.
Initial entry teams made access to the leak inside the building, Santiago said, and determined safety controls within the facility had initiated and stopped any additional product from leaking.
Hazmat teams also determined quickly that the industrial-grade hydrogen peroxide leak was contained to the Baxter property and did not impact any nearby homes, businesses, or the environment.
Hazmat crews from neighboring departments were released from the scene at 11:30 p.m., Santiago said. Fox Lake Fire cleared the scene at about 12:20 p.m.
