Wayne Christiansen, 78, of Villa Park

A Villa Park man has been charged with aggravated battery after hitting a victim multiple times in the head with a hammer in Union, sheriff officials said.

McHenry County Sheriff Public Information Officer Emily Matusek-Baker said deputies were dispatched at 6:53 p.m. on June 4 for an injured person near the intersection of Dunham Road and East Coral Road in unincorporated Union.

Upon arrival, responding deputies learned that a physical altercation occurred between two individuals, Matusek-Baker said.

During this altercation, a male subject was struck with a blunt object and received serious injuries, she said.

Wayne Christiansen, 78, was identified as the person who struck the victim, Matusek-Baker said.

A criminal complaint filed in McHenry County Circuit Court reads that Christiansen knowingly caused bodily harm in that he struck the victim on his head with a hammer while he was on or about a public way, causing a right nasal fracture.

Court records also show Christiansen is a resident of Villa Park, but McHenry County officials have him listed as being homeless.

The victim was transported to the hospital, Matusek-Baker said, where he remains in stable condition.

Christiansen was charged after the incident with Class 3 felony counts of Aggravated Battery Causing Great Bodily Harm, Aggravated Battery Involving a Deadly Weapon and Aggravated Battery Upon a Public Way, court records show.

All three charges are punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

At his First Appearance court hearing Thursday morning, McHenry County prosecutors filed a petition to detain Christiansen until trial due to being a real and present threat to the safety of the community.

That petition was granted during a Detention hearing Thursday afternoon.

Christiansen is due back in court June 12, court records show.
