Police say they have arrested and charged a gunman who entered the lobby of a hotel in Buffalo Grove and robbed the clerk of money in December.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 3:17 a.m. on December 21 to the Extended Stay America, 1525 Busch Parkway, for a report of an armed robbery.

Police officials said witnesses reported that an offender approached the front desk and jumped over the counter

The suspect, who was displaying a handgun, demanded cash from the clerk. He was later identified as Marco Vazquez, 28, of Palatine.

Vazquez fled eastbound across Milwaukee Avenue on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries were reported, police officials said.

Officers were unable to locate Vazquez and an investigation was ongoing. The police department later identified Vazquez and took him into custody on Wednesday.

Vazquez was charged with armed robbery, a Class X felony, and aggravated robbery, a Class 1 felony. An arrest warrant was obtained for him last month.

He was transported to the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan for a First Appearance Court hearing on Thursday.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Vazquez pending trial and a judge granted the petition following a detention hearing on Friday afternoon.

Vazquez remains held in the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 3 for a preliminary hearing.
