Gurnee Police will be joining forces with several law enforcement agencies across northern Illinois to participate in a coordinated traffic safety initiative along Route 21, officials said.
Detective Shawn Gaylor, Public Information Officer for Gurnee Police, said Gurnee Police will be participating in the initiative on Tuesday, June 17, and is expected to work with Libertyville, Vernon Hills, Lincolnshire, Riverwoods, Buffalo Grove Police Departments, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police.
She said the regional initiative will aim to reduce traffic crashes and promote safer driving behaviors through a combination of education, public awareness, and targeted enforcement.
In Lake County, participating agencies will focus on some of the most common and dangerous driving violations, including speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt compliance, and hazardous or reckless driving.
These behaviors continue to be leading causes of serious and fatal crashes, and addressing them remains a top priority, she said.
“This initiative is about more than enforcement, it’s about protecting lives,” said Gurnee Police Chief Brian Smith. “Every driver has a role to play in keeping our roads safe, and when law enforcement agencies unite in efforts like this, it reinforces the shared responsibility we all have in protecting our communities and preventing crashes.”
Each department will tailor their approach to the unique needs of its communities while supporting the shared goal of safer roads for everyone, Gaylor said.
Gaylor said the Gurnee Police Department reminds all motorists to obey speed limits, put away distractions, buckle up, and drive responsibly, not just during this initiative but every day.
Keeping our streets safe is a community effort, and together, through awareness and responsible driving, we can make a real difference in protecting everyone who lives, works, and travels here, she said.
