Several emergency responders were celebrated for forming a “chain of survival” for a man who suffered from a life-threatening medical emergency while driving in Highland Park.

The City of Highland Park presented formal commendations to Highland Park Police Officer Ginger Stokes and dentist Dr. Michael Czarkowski, as well as recognized the professionalism and lifesaving contributions of Highland Park Firefighter/EMTs Kevin Best, Andrew Beverly, Trevor Mount, and Nick Traske.

Dr. Benjamin Feinzimer, D.O., of Endeavor Health’s Physician Response Vehicle Program, was also honored during the event at City Hall on Tuesday, May 27.

The emergency personnel were recognized for saving the life of August Swanenberg in March.

Officials said Swanenberg suffered a medical emergency while driving in March, officials said.

Stokes quickly utilized the AED in her squad car to deliver what would be a lifesaving shock, officials said.

Czarkowski was also on scene and provided CPR and supplemental oxygen until paramedics arrived, officials said.

The first responders then transported the patient to Highland Park Hospital, officials said.

Stokes and Czarkowski received a formal commendation from Chief of Police Lou Jogmen for their lifesaving actions.

The City also welcomed Swanenberg and his family, along with Highland Park Hospital President Nikki Fernandez, to the meeting to celebrate Swanenberg’s continued recovery, officials said.
