Two people died in a suspected murder-suicide after a boyfriend shot his girlfriend before shooting himself in Zion early Thursday morning, police said.

The Zion Police Department and Zion Fire-Rescue Department responded around 4:12 a.m. Thursday to the 3400 block of Clover Lane for a report of a shooting.

Zion Police Department Detective Lt. Paul Kehrli said a call was received for two people who had been shot inside a residence.

Officers arrived and found a 23-year-old Beach Park woman and a 24-year-old Zion man who had both been shot.

The man, who resided at the home, and the woman were later pronounced dead, Kehrli said.

One of the subjects was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead and the other was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed that the man and woman were in a dating relationship.

The two had been arguing together during the prior evening and into the early morning hours on Thursday, Kehrli said.

Investigators believe the man shot the woman and then shot himself.

A handgun registered to the man was found at the scene and is believed to be the weapon used in the incident.

Kehrli said no other persons are being sought at this time and no charges have been filed.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identities of the man and woman.
