The Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group has arrested a convicted felon accused of trafficking fentanyl-laced drugs while possessing a loaded gun in Park City.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Group (SIG) concluded an investigation that resulted in the arrest of Marital D. Hayes, 39, of Park City.
SIG began the investigation after developing information that Hayes, a convicted felon, was selling narcotics, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.
Detectives initiated an undercover operation and confirmed Hayes was selling heroin laced with fentanyl and crack cocaine, Covelli said.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Hayes’ home in the 700 block of Chestnut Avenue in Park City, which was executed on Monday.
Over 40 grams of crack cocaine, nearly 10 grams of heroin laced with fentanyl and a loaded firearm were seized.
Hayes was taken into custody after he exited the apartment during the search warrant, Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Theis said.
Theis said the .38 caliber pistol was located under a pillow in Hayes’ bedroom. A scale with cocaine residue was also located.
Hayes admitted that the drugs and the gun belonged to him, Theis said.
The man said he was selling the drugs and had the gun for a year.
“The Lake County Sheriff’s Office thanks Gurnee Police Department and Park City Police Department for the assistance during the investigation,” Covelli said.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of three Counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, three counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance and two counts of felon in possession of a weapon.
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office filed a petition to detain Hayes while he awaits trial.
Hayes remains held in the Lake County Jail and is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Wednesday afternoon.
