Lake County Sheriff’s Canine Lux, who is the son of Canine Dax, tracked down a naked suspect for nearly two miles near Mundelein Wednesday morning, his first apprehension as a new canine.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Canine Lux had his “first find” and is following in his father Dax’s paws.
Lux located a man overnight who violated an order of protection in unincorporated Mundelein.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said the incident occurred in the 26200 block of North Hickory Avenue in unincorporated Mundelein around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday.
A 911 caller reported someone was on their property attempting to get into vehicles.
The suspect fled on foot before sheriff’s deputies arrived, the sheriff’s office said.
Lux tracked for nearly two miles and located the suspect naked in the backyard of a house.
The sheriff’s office said the man immediately surrendered upon hearing Lux’s barking and was taken into custody.
The suspect was identified as Stephen G. Kunkel, 42, of Mundelein.
Deputies learned Kunkel was the respondent in an order of protection and he was unlawfully within the protected area listed in the order of protection, Covelli said.
Kunkel was charged with violating an order of protection and disorderly conduct.
He was transported to the Lake County Jail and released with a future court date after prosecutors did not file a petition to detain him pending trial.
