Residents were left displaced after a kitchen fire caused damage to an apartment, leaving it uninhabitable, in Mundelein Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

The Mundelein Fire Department and Mundelein Police Department responded around 2:11 p.m. Tuesday to the 900 block of East Orchard Street for a report of an appliance fire.

Fire crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and found a multi-family apartment building, according to Mundelein Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeremy Lockwood.

No smoke or fire was visible from the outside of the building and firefighters went to the affected unit.

They found an oven that was fully engulfed in flames and spreading to the surrounding cabinets in the kitchen, Lockwood said.

The incident was upgraded to bring additional fire department resources to the scene.

The fire was extinguished with a dry chemical fire extinguisher.

Lockwood said additional arriving fire crews pulled a hose line to the inside of the building and ensured the fire was fully extinguished.

Searches of the first and second floors of the building were completed.

All occupants had evacuated prior to the fire department arriving following the activation of the fire alarm.

No smoke or fire extended beyond the affected apartment, which was deemed uninhabitable.

The two adult residents were displaced and building management arranged for temporary housing for them, Lockwood said.

All other apartment units remain habitable and utilities were restored. No injuries were reported.

A damage estimate was not immediately available and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Lockwood said the fire was fought by 20 firefighters staffing four fire engines, a squad, an ambulance, a ladder truck and an incident command vehicle.

The Mundelein Fire Department was assisted by the Countryside, Grayslake, Libertyville, Gurnee, Lincolnshire and Long Grove fire departments.

The fire department said residents should have functioning smoke detectors to provide early warning of a fire.
