A motorcyclist was injured and transported to the hospital after a crash involving a police squad car that was responding to a call in Richmond, authorities said.

The Richmond Police Department and Richmond Fire Protection District responded around 4:45 p.m. Sunday to the area of Route 12 and Kuhn Road for a police-involved vehicle crash.

Richmond Police Department Sgt. Jennifer Fillicaro said the crash involved a Richmond police car and a motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, an adult male, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

He was transported by an ambulance to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment, Fillicaro said.

The police officer who was driving the squad car was uninjured.

A preliminary investigation showed that the officer was responding to a driving complaint.

A caller had reported that a vehicle was swerving in traffic and nearly rear-ending the complainant, Fillicaro said.

The officer located the suspect vehicle and attempted to conduct a U-turn to follow the suspect.

Both the squad car and the motorcycle were traveling eastbound on Route 12 when the collision occurred.

“In light of the involvement of a Richmond Police Department vehicle, and to avoid any actual or perceived conflict of interest, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has been requested to, and has assumed, responsibility for the investigation,” Fillicaro said.

Fillicaro added that the motorcycle was traveling behind the squad car when the collision occurred.
