Officials say police officers opened fire and fatally shot a suspect armed with a knife who “charged” at them in Highland Park Friday morning.
The Highland Park Police Department responded around 4:53 a.m. Friday to the 900 block of Half Day Road in Highland Park.
City officials said a call was received for an adult male in the roadway on Half Day Road.
Officers arrived to check his well-being and the subject “quickly charged” at officers with a knife.
“Given the imminent threat, officers fired,” city officials said.
The man was struck by the gunfire and officers called for paramedics while beginning lifesaving measures.
The Highland Park Fire Department arrived at the scene at 5:04 a.m. Three ambulances were sent to the scene.
Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and the man was pronounced dead.
The Highland Park Police Department called the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force to conduct an independent investigation.
The task force will assume responsibility for the investigation in accordance with state law.
Half Day Road is shut down between Western Avenue and Compton Avenue due to the police activity. Detour signage is in place.
“While there is no threat to public safety, please avoid the area if possible to allow investigators to work,” city officials said.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded and is in the process of scheduling an autopsy on the subject, whose identity has not been released.
