Police are continuing to search for a missing college professor who disappeared from Arlington Heights after a fire department search of water at a Long Grove forest preserve came up empty.

The Arlington Heights Police Department said they are seeking the public’s assistance in locating Adam Gerber.

Gerber is 54 years old and described as having dark brown hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen around 11:20 p.m. Monday near Arlington Heights Road and Lake Cook Road in Buffalo Grove.

Gerber’s vehicle was also located near the intersection, police said.

Gerber is a software developer and an adjunct associate professor at the University of Chicago since 2011.

The Long Grove Fire Department responded around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday to Buffalo Creek Forest Preserve, 18163 Checker Road in Long Grove, to search a body of water.

The pond is located on the west side of Arlington Heights Road just south of Checker Drive and connects to Buffalo Creek.

The fire department activated the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to the box alarm level.

The activation brought a large number of fire department divers, sonar equipment and specialized resources to the scene from Lake and Cook counties.

The responding fire departments included Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove Village, Mount Prospect, Countryside, Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates, Arlington Heights, Barrington, Streamwood, Palatine, Northfield, Fox Lake, Antioch, Newport, Lake Zurich, Libertyville, Lake Forest, Grayslake, Wauconda, Round Lake, Lake Villa and Mundelein.

The fire department described it as a “recovery effort” but the search was discontinued Tuesday evening and Gerber was not located.

Police officials said around 9:20 p.m. Tuesday that an “extensive search” was conducted at the forest preserve.

A police canine track from Gerber’s vehicle to the preserve focused the search efforts, including the pond where the fire department was seen searching.

Police said Gerber is still considered missing and an investigation into his whereabouts is ongoing.

Authorities are asking residents and businesses in the area of Lake Cook Road and Arlington Heights Road to check surveillance cameras for anyone matching Gerber’s description between late evening on Monday and early morning on Tuesday.

Anyone who has information on Gerber’s whereabouts is asked to call the Arlington Heights Police Department at 847-368-5300.
