Firefighters rescued a dog who was trapped inside a home after a fire broke out on a deck and spread to the house in Johnsburg Tuesday morning, authorities said.
The McHenry Township Fire Protection District responded around 11:57 a.m. Tuesday to the 3400 block of North Cove Court in Johnsburg for a report of a structure fire.
Fire crews arrived in less than five minutes to find a fire on the rear deck extending to the home, according to McHenry Township Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Kevin Sears.
A passerby spotted the fire and called 911. Sears said the residents were not home at the time of the fire.
Firefighters rescued a dog from inside the home as they worked to extinguish the fire. The dog was uninjured.
Firefighters brought the fire under control within 10 minutes of arriving at the scene, Sears said.
A search of the residence confirmed no one was inside except the dog. No injuries were reported to any firefighters.
The fire damaged the rear deck and exterior siding of the home.
While the inside of the house sustained smoke and water damage, it remains habitable.
The Antioch, Cary, Crystal Lake, Nunda Rural, Wauconda and Wonder Lake fire departments assisted at the scene or covered McHenry fire stations.
Sears said the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the McHenry Township Fire Protection District.
