A dozen fire departments were called after a fire heavily engulfed a house in Algonquin and caused $350,000 in damage, leaving the residents displaced Sunday morning.

The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 8:25 a.m. Sunday to the 1000 block of Menoma Trail in Algonquin for a report of a structure fire.

Multiple 911 calls were received for a garage, which was attached to a house, that was on fire.

Responding fire crews reported seeing a visible smoke header in the distance.

The incident was upgraded to a working fire response and then to a box alarm through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to bring additional resources to the scene.

First arriving firefighters encountered heavy flames and smoke from the garage of a two-story single-family home.

Flames and smoke were also encountered throughout the rear of the home spreading to the second floor, fire officials said.

Firefighters began an aggressive interior attack on the fire by pulling hose lines to extinguish the blaze.

Fire officials said it took fire crews approximately an hour to bring the fire under control.

No injuries were reported to any residents or to firefighters. Two vehicles were also completely destroyed.

Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District Fire Chief John Knebl said the residents were home and able to evacuate safely when the fire broke out.

The blaze caused significant damage that left the home uninhabitable. The estimated damage was at least $350,000.

Knebl said the home was a total loss. No pets were inside the home.

The Crystal Lake, Carpentersville, Huntley, Nunda Rural, West Dundee, Rutland Dundee, Barrington, East Dundee, Palatine, Fox River Grove and Cary fire departments assisted during the incident.

Fire officials said an investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
