Police said in an update that five victims were shot in total after approximately 20 shots were fired during a large gathering at the lakefront beach in North Chicago Saturday morning.

The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 4:23 a.m. Saturday to Foss Park Beach, 35 Lakeview Drive in North Chicago, for a report of a shooting.

A 911 call was received for multiple people shot at the lakefront, according to fire department radio traffic.

Officers arrived and searched the area but were unable to find any victims at the scene.

It was later learned that at least two shooting victims self-transported to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

Police officials told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that it was later determined that five people had been shot in total.

The victims drove themselves to area hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

The victims were four men and a woman. They ranged from their 20s to 30s.

Prosecutors said that multiple vehicles were observed fleeing the area and people were running when officers first arrived.

Witnesses told police that a party had started at a bar and that the establishment was closing.

Prosecutors said approximately 60-80 people moved to the lakefront to continue partying.

Witnesses heard approximately 20 shots fired an hour later and multiple people ended up being shot, prosecutors said.

Police later arrested a suspect who was caught illegally possessing and brandishing a gun during the shooting and felony charges were being filed against him.

The North Chicago Police Department said further information is not being released at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
