A victim tracked down their stolen vehicle from Zion in Winthrop Harbor and two suspects fled from law enforcement, prompting a large search effort Sunday evening.

The Winthrop Harbor Police Department said officers were investigating a stolen vehicle report originating from Zion.

Officers located the stolen vehicle near the 1100 block of Sheridan Road in Winthrop Harbor, police officials said.

Zion Police Department Lt. Derek Zaloudek said the black Chevrolet Silverado was stolen from the 2700 block of Emmaus Avenue around 8 p.m. Sunday.

The owner tracked the Chevrolet to Winthrop Harbor and called the police.

Police officials said a heavy police presence was brought out during the incident. Canine units and drones also assisted.

Two of the three occupants in the Chevrolet fled when law enforcement arrived, Zaloudek said. The one occupant who stayed was taken into custody.

Neighboring police departments were called to the scene and a perimeter was established.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office, Waukegan Police Department, Zion Police Department and Winthrop Harbor Police Department were among the agencies to participate in the search.

Winthrop Harbor police said more than one suspect was arrested and transferred to the Zion Police Department for further investigation and charges.

Zaloudek said that only one suspect was arrested and the Zion Police Department is working to identify the other two occupants of the Chevrolet that fled.

“Our personnel are working to identify the other two occupants, who remain outstanding, and appropriate charging is pending against those involved,” he told Lake and McHenry County Scanner.

The investigation remains open and ongoing by the Zion Police Department and further information was not immediately available for release.
