A man was sent to the hospital after a multiple-vehicle crash that left a car rolled over on its side at a busy intersection in Gurnee Tuesday morning, police said.

The Gurnee Police Department and Gurnee Fire Department responded around 7:35 a.m. Tuesday to the area of Washington Street and Route 21 for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Officers arrived and found a three-vehicle crash in the intersection, according to Gurnee Police Department Public Information Officer Shawn Gaylor.

A preliminary investigation showed that a silver Honda Civic, driven by a 54-year-old man, was traveling westbound on Washington Street approaching Route 21.

Gaylor said the Honda entered the intersection as the traffic light was turning yellow.

A Kia Sorrento, driven by a 23-year-old woman, was simultaneously traveling eastbound on Washington Street.

The Kia was attempting to make a left turn to go northbound on Milwaukee Avenue, Gaylor said.

The Kia entered the intersection and collided with the westbound Honda Civic as the light was yellow.

The impact caused the Kia to roll over onto its side and slide into a black Toyota Rav4, which was stationary in the southbound left turn lane on Milwaukee Avenue.

The driver of the Honda was transported by ambulance to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for a precautionary evaluation.

“Fortunately, there were no major injuries reported at the scene,” Gaylor said.

The driver of the 23-year-old driver of the Kia was cited for failure to yield while turning left.
