Two people were sent to the hospital after a four-vehicle crash that resulted in an SUV rolling over onto two cars, causing heavy damage, in Riverwoods, police said.

The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District, Northbrook Fire Department, Highland Park Fire Department, Riverwoods Police Department and Deerfield Police Department responded around 12:06 p.m. Friday to Deerfield Road and Saunders Road for a vehicle crash.

Riverwoods Police Department Commander George Pfutzenreuter said officers arrived and found a four-vehicle crash at the four-way intersection, which is controlled by a traffic signal.

An investigation determined that a 2025 Mercedes GLE was traveling eastbound on Deerfield Road.

The Mercedes GLE collided with a 2012 Acura MDX as it traveled northbound on Saunders Road in the middle of the intersection, Pfutzenreuter said.

The Mercedes GLE rolled over onto the front of two other vehicles, which were stopped at the traffic light in the westbound lanes of Deerfield Road.

The Mercedes GLE then rolled off the two stopped vehicles and came to rest on all four wheels.

Pfutzenreuter said the driver of the Mercedes GLE, Aleem Khalid, 34, of Northbrook, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

All occupants involved were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger in the Acura were both transported by ambulance to Endeavor Health Glenbrook Hospital.

Khalid, who was the sole occupant of the Mercedes GLE, declined transport to the hospital, Pfutzenreuter said.

The drivers and sole occupants of the two westbound stopped vehicles, a 2009 Honda Civic and a Mercedes ML350, also refused transport to the hospital.

Khalid is scheduled to appear for an initial court hearing on August 6 in Mundelein.
