Lake County Sheriff’s Office Canine Drako is being credited with tracking down two suspects in separate incidents in Libertyville and Waukegan less than two hours apart.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday morning that Canine Drako had two successful overnight deployments.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said Drako was called to assist the Libertyville Police Department around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday.
A man was seen jumping a fence at a storage facility in the 1900 block of Kelley Court in Libertyville.
Drako conducted a search and identified a specific storage unit on the property.
The canine jumped on the door and began sniffing around the seams, the sheriff’s office said.
Officers opened the unlocked unit and found the suspect sleeping on a couch inside.
The person was turned over to the Libertyville Police Department for further investigation, Covelli said.
Less than two hours later, Drako and his handler, Deputy Roxana Stancioiu, responded to Waukegan around 3:55 a.m.
A person committed a domestic battery in the 38700 block of North Sheridan Road in Beach Park.
The suspect fled in a vehicle before sheriff’s deputies arrived.
His vehicle was located in the 400 block of Corey Avenue in Waukegan and Drako conducted a track from the vehicle.
The sheriff’s office said the canine led deputies and officers to a fenced yard and indicated heavily near a hard-to-reach area by a fence and garage.
Officers maneuvered around the tight space and found the suspect curled up behind a garage.
The man was taken into custody without incident and charged with domestic battery.
“In two overnight deployments, K9 Drako showed exactly why he’s a valuable part of our team,” the sheriff’s office said.
