A landscaping company worker was flown to the hospital with serious injuries following a burn pile mishap at a home in Ringwood Wednesday morning, fire officials said.
The Wonder Lake Fire Protection District responded around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday to the 5600 block of North Ridgeway Road in Ringwood for a report of a burn victim.
Wonder Lake Fire Chief Mike Weber said a landscaping company was performing work around a yard.
The workers attempted to burn a pile of brush and likely used the wrong type of accelerant, Weber said.
An adult male, believed to be in his 50s, suffered burns to his arms, face and neck.
A LifeNet helicopter was initially placed on standby while fire crews were responding and then was requested to launch after the fire department arrived at the scene.
Paramedics found the victim was putting cold water on his burns and they began treating him, Weber said.
The helicopter landed just north of the scene in the cul-de-sac on Ridgeway Road.
Weber said the victim was transferred to the helicopter and flown to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, which has a specialized burn center.
The man was flown due to the extent of the burn area and because it was possibly affecting his airway.
His injuries were described as serious but non-life-threatening, Weber said.
The Woodstock Fire/Rescue District assisted in responding to a separate medical call in Wonder Lake that occurred around the same time.
