A man is charged with possession of a multitude of drugs after authorities said he was shooting rounds of ammunition from his front yard near Gurnee, police said.
Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Deputies responded to the 18600 block of Highfield Drive in unincorporated Gurnee for a call of shots fired at 2:15 a.m. on July 5.
The 911 caller saw a man and a woman shooting guns from their yard, Covelli said, and sheriff’s deputies saw several discharged firearm rounds in the yard of the residence when arriving at the home.
Sheriff’s deputies arrived and spoke with Nazareth T. Collins, 34, as he exited the front door, Covelli said.
Collins and others inside the home were uncooperative and declined deputies’ request to search the residence, Covelli said.
Believing the firearms used were likely still inside, Covelli said Deputies worked with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office to obtain a search warrant, which was approved at 6:20 a.m.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Tactical Response Team executed the search warrant and located over 500 grams of cocaine, more than 40 grams of MDMA pills, over 1,400 grams of cannabis, 35 grams of psilocybin mushrooms and an unknown quantity of Alprazolam pills in Collins’ bedroom, Covelli said.
Covelli said the firearms were not located, and sheriff’s deputies believe the weapons were likely removed from the home by another individual before deputies arrived.
After reviewing the facts and circumstances of the incident, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved a Class X felony charge of Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver; Class 1 felony charges of Unlawful Possession of Cocaine and Unlawful Possession of MDMA; Class 2 felony charges of Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver – Psilocybin, Unlawful Possession with Intent to Deliver MDMA, Possession of Cannabis with Intent to Deliver; a Class 3 felony charge of Possession of Cannabis; Class 4 felony charges of Unlawful Possession of Psilocybin and Unlawful Possession of Alprazolam.
Further charges are possible regarding the discharge of firearms, Covelli said.
Collins remains held pending an initial court appearance Sunday, Covelli said, adding the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office intends to file a petition to detain Collins while awaiting trial.
