One person was killed and several others seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash with heavy damage in Wadsworth late Saturday, sheriff officials said.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called to West Russell Road at Frontage Road in Wadsworth for the three-vehicle crash at 10:15 p.m. Saturday, said Lake County Sheriff Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

Upon arrival, deputies found multiple occupants injured and three vehicles with major damage, Covelli said.

Covelli said the preliminary investigation shows a 2020 Porsche Macan, driven by a 58-year-old man from Addison, was traveling westbound on Russell Road and approaching the stop sign at Frontage Road.

Ahead of the Porsche was a 2016 Chevrolet Volt, driven by a 35-year-old Niles man, which was stopped behind a 2020 Mercedes-Benz, driven by a 37-year-old Rolling Meadows woman, Covelli said.

The Volt and the Mercedes-Benz were stopped at the stop sign on Frontage Road, Covelli said.

The driver of the Porsche failed to stop and struck the rear of the Chevrolet at a high rate of speed, Covelli said.

The force of this crash pushed the Chevrolet into the Mercedes-Benz.

A passenger in the Chevrolet Volt, a 33-year-old woman from Niles, died after being transported to an area hospital with critical injuries, Covelli said.

The driver of the Chevrolet Volt and a 4-year-old girl passenger from Niles were transported to an area hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, Covelli said.

The driver of the Mercedes-Benz, a 40-year-old male passenger of the Mercedes-Benz, and the driver of the Porsche were also transported to area hospitals with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, Covelli said.

Speed and alcohol impairment appear to be factors for the driver of the Porsche, Covelli said.

He added that criminal charges are likely to be filed upon his discharge from the hospital.
