One person suffered traumatic injuries after a large firework mortar struck him in the face and exploded near Crystal Lake, fire officials said.
Emergency personnel from the Nunda Rural Fire Protection District were dispatched to the 1300 block of Beach Street in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a reported traumatic injury involving fireworks at 9:16 p.m. Saturday, said Nunda Rural Fire Protection District Public Information Officer Alex Vucha.
Upon arrival, Vucha said first responders encountered a large crowd gathered on a small one-way street, hindering the ability of paramedics to quickly locate the patient.
Once access was made, crews located the adult male who had sustained serious injuries after the large firework mortar is believed to have struck him in the face and exploded, Vucha said.
A medical helicopter was requested due to the extent and nature of his injuries, Vucha said. However, air transport was unavailable due to inclement weather.
The patient was transported via ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for further treatment.
The Cary Fire Protection District assisted and provided additional personnel to support the transport, Vucha said.
Vucha added Nunda Rural Fire Protection District appreciates their assistance and coordination.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, Vucha said.
Vucha added that fireworks are responsible for thousands of preventable injuries across the country each year, with many of the injuries involving the head, face, hands, or eyes.
The consequences can be severe and long-lasting, Vucha said.
The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District encourages everyone to consider the risks and prioritize safety during holiday celebrations.
