A man was hospitalized with apparent serious injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in downtown Algonquin Thursday evening.
The Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District and Algonquin Police Department responded around 9:59 p.m. Thursday to the area of Tavern at the Bridge, 101 East Algonquin Road, for a report of a vehicle crash with injuries.
Firefighters arrived and found a pedestrian who was down in the roadway after being hit by a vehicle.
Algonquin Police Department Sgt. Jason Burzynski said a black Subaru was traveling westbound on Route 62, also known as Algonquin Road.
The Subaru was approaching River Road and struck a 55-year-old Algonquin man.
The pedestrian was walking northbound in the crosswalk at Route 62 and River Road, Burzynski said.
The driver of the Subaru told officers he did not see the pedestrian due to the rain.
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and helped the injured victim until first responders arrived.
The fire department requested a medical helicopter to respond due to the nature of the man’s injuries but the helicopter declined to fly due to the weather conditions.
The pedestrian was transported to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in Huntley where he remains.
The man’s condition was not known but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Citations are pending and the roadway was reopened a short time after the crash occurred.
