The coroner has released the identity of a 19-year-old man who died after he was shot in the chest when a gunman or gunmen fired shots into a home in North Chicago Saturday morning.

An autopsy performed Monday showed that Demingo Williams, 19, of North Chicago, died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest, according to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek.

The North Chicago Police Department and North Chicago Fire Department responded around 1:05 a.m. Saturday to the 2200 block of Kemble Avenue in North Chicago for a report of a shooting.

Fire department radio traffic indicated a victim had been shot while upstairs in a home.

Police officers arrived and found Williams was unconscious and barely breathing.

They began performing lifesaving measures, including CPR, on Williams who had been shot in the chest.

An ambulance transported Williams to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, which is a Level 1 trauma center.

The man was pronounced dead in the emergency room just after 2 a.m., according to Lake County Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

A second ambulance was dispatched to the scene to treat a person who was in shock. The ambulance transported them to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force was called to the scene to assist the North Chicago Police Department with the investigation.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Spokesperson Christopher Covelli said the offender or offenders involved fled the scene before officers arrived at the shots fired call.

The residence was hit multiple times by shots fired from outside the home, with Williams being struck by one of the rounds, Covelli said.

Task force investigators responded to the scene and continue to investigate.

“At this time, no one is in custody, and the investigation remains ongoing,” Covelli said Monday. No arrests had been announced as of Tuesday.
