The sheriff says a Lincolnshire man was taken into custody after he allegedly slashed a woman with a knife and then strangled her near Lake Bluff Wednesday evening.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office responded around 8:25 p.m. Wednesday to an apartment building in the 600 block of West Washington Avenue in unincorporated Lake Bluff for a report of an aggravated battery in progress.

Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said a person called 911 to report a man, later identified as Angel Diaz, 25, of Lincolnshire, was armed with a knife and threatening others inside the apartment.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and learned Diaz had fled from the apartment when he found out someone had called 911.

An investigation showed Diaz is acquainted with the two people who live in the apartment that he was visiting, Covelli said.

The witnesses reported Diaz arrived and appeared to be intoxicated.

He began an argument with a 25-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man who live in the apartment.

Covelli said Diaz produced a knife and slashed at the woman, cutting her hand, during the argument. He then strangled the woman, Covelli said.

Both the woman and the man were able to briefly get away from Diaz and call 911, which caused Diaz to flee.

The woman’s injuries did not require medical attention, Covelli said. Sheriff’s deputies searched the area for Diaz but were unable to locate him.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 12:45 a.m. Thursday from the victim who reported that Diaz was back at the apartment, pounding on the door and refusing to leave.

Sheriff’s deputies responded and were able to take Diaz into custody, Covelli said.
