Investigators are searching for a vehicle that struck a motorcycle, leaving a McHenry man seriously injured, and fled the scene on Route 173 near Antioch early Saturday morning.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office and Newport Township Fire Protection District responded around 3:10 a.m. Saturday to the area of Route 173 and Crawford Road in Old Mill Creek for a vehicle crash with injuries.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived and found a damaged 1993 Kawasaki Ninja, driven by a 54-year-old McHenry man, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli.

The motorcyclist was down on the ground and suffering from serious injuries.

Covelli said a preliminary investigation shows the Kawasaki was traveling eastbound on Route 173 when it was struck from behind by an unknown vehicle.

The impact caused the driver of the Kawasaki to lose control and crash.

The driver of the Kawasaki was transported by ambulance to an area hospital with serious injuries, Covelli said.

His injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Crash investigators recovered car parts from the offending vehicle at the scene and are examining them.

Investigators are working to determine the make and model of the car that caused the crash and fled, Covelli said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
