Police say a driver was arrested for reckless driving after he crashed into two homes, causing significant damage to one and injuring a homeowner, in Mundelein Saturday afternoon.
The Mundelein Fire Department and Mundelein Police Department responded around 4:58 p.m. Saturday to the 1400 block of Kessler Drive in Mundelein for a vehicle crash with injuries.
Fire crews arrived at the scene and initially reported a two-vehicle crash with one vehicle that had crashed into a home.
Mundelein Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Sashko said it was confirmed that only one vehicle was involved.
The Mercedes-Benz sedan had crashed into the side of the attached garage of the house. The vehicle had also struck a second home.
One of the homeowners was injured while trying to avoid the vehicle, Sashko said. Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene.
The homeowner was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of minor injuries.
Two people in the Mercedes-Benz were evaluated by paramedics and declined transport to the hospital.
Mundelein Police Department Commander of Investigations Rick Wilfenger said the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E63 was driven by Igor Glina, 46, of Mundelein.
An investigation determined that Glina was driving recklessly and lost control before striking the two houses, Wilfenger said.
Glina, who was not injured, was arrested and charged with reckless driving, illegal squealing of tires and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash. He was released and given an initial court date of August 21.
Wilfenger said alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash.
The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level for a structural collapse response due to the “compromised integrity” of the garage, Sashko said.
The activation brought fire departments, including structural collapse technicians and equipment, from throughout Lake and McHenry counties to the scene.
The Antioch, Lake Zurich, Lake Villa, Lake Forest, Mundelein, Libertyville, Grayslake, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills, Round Lake, Deerfield, Lake Bluff and Countryside fire departments responded.
Sashko said structural collapse technicians were able to shore up the garage area and stabilize it so the vehicle could be removed safely by a tow truck.
Additional shoring was put into place after the vehicle was removed.
The Mundelein Building Department responded to the scene and deemed the residence habitable and safe, Sashko said.
The residents were able to re-enter and stay in the home.
