Police are warning the community to lock their vehicles and report suspicious behavior after numerous cars were burglarized by an organized crew in Cary during the overnight hours.

The Cary Police Department issued a community alert saying that several vehicle burglaries were committed during the overnight hours between Sunday and Monday.

The burglaries occurred in an area bordered by First Street to the west, Decker and Montana to the east, Three Oaks Road to the north and East Main Street to the south.

Most vehicles were left unlocked by their owners with valuables inside.

“Please remember to lock your vehicles, remove valuables, and report suspicious circumstances by calling 9-1-1,” police said.

Cary Deputy Police Chief Scott Naydenoff said it appears that the suspects are part of an organized group.

The group is similar to previous incidents where a vehicle is used to transport the offenders around the neighborhood.

Naydenoff said multiple offenders “work” one area very quickly to burglarize vehicles before moving on.

Seven vehicle burglaries were reported in Cary during the overnight hours from Sunday to Monday, Naydenoff said.

Officers were able to obtain surveillance images from residents’ homes showing the suspects.

The police department in Oakwood Hills, which borders the north side of Cary, warned its residents in a separate community alert.

The department said neighboring police agencies were actively investigating a series of recent car break-ins but it is unclear what other towns were also experiencing the break-ins.

Police say residents should always lock their vehicles even if leaving them for just a few minutes, remove valuables from their vehicles and report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately.
